The first Church in our area, was organized in April 1844 and  is Cedar Bayou Methodist on Ferry Road.  A group of Methodists met for 2 years in brush arbors and bought 10 acres from John R. Rhea for $40 in 1847, to build a log church.   The cemetery on the southeast side was added around 1857.There was a second Methodist Church located near Duke Hill in Pelly, named Harmony Grove refers to the current St. John’s United Methodist Church. It was also known as First Methodist Church, Pelly, before it became St. John’s and a third in Mt. Belvieu.  The first recorded Baptist Church in our area was in 1860 and built very close to the original Methodist Church, but on the east side of Cedar Bayou.  Here is a photo of the current building.
